an active bibliophile…

It is true, I love books. And I am thrilled that Lyman, of Creating a Better Life, tagged me to participate in this book meme. Some of my favorite reading memories are from the childrens section of our public library. My passion for reading has existed since I first learned to read, enabling me to escape the world I lived in and explore the life of Dr. Doolittle with his animals or travel to the time of Merlin, the magician, with Mary Stewart. There have been periods where I read nothing, or simple, mindless fiction. Mostly I have enjoyed reading for knowledge, especially personal growth.

So, to get on with it…

How many books do I own? Not many. Since 2002, I have packed my worldly possessions 9 times. I lived with the motto, “Less is more in 2004″, downsizing the entire year. To have accumulated 110 books with all the moving I have done, it appears most of them are favorites that I would probably never part with. And I had a library card in each of those nine locations.

What was the last book that I read? Actually, it was three books by the same man, Dave Pelzer. The titles are The Child Called It, The Lost Boy & A Man Called Dave he found the courage to survive, forgive and now helps others through telling his story. It was emotional for me. Having lived through verbal, emotional & physical abuse myself, I applaude his courage. I know from my short experience with writing about things “out loud”, the power goes away when the secret is revealed. And then the healing can begin.

What was the last book I purchased? Again, I purchased 3 little books the other day from Mike Dooley of Notes from the Universe fame and his mom, Sheelagh Mawe. Mike’s Lost in Space, is an easy read with a big message. And his mother’s books, DANDELION, The Extraordinary Life of a Misfit and The Lonely Little Tree, are sure to become classics for both young and old.

and last but not least… Name 5 meaningful books.

1.  It Is ALL Right, by Isabel M. Hickey.  A small book with a wonderful message. The first book I read when starting on a spiritual path.

2. Survival Into the 21st Century, by Viktoras Kulvinskas. One of the earliest new age books, touches on so many topics of natural healing. I finally met Viktoras in 1995 and had him autograph my well-worn first edition from 20 years earlier!

3. Vibrant Living, by James Levin, M.D. and Natalie Cederquist. I love so many recipes in this book of living and raw food preparation.

4. A NEW EARTH, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle. This book spelled it out in plain English for me. I was ready to comprehend this book when it appeared.

5. Your Immortal Reality, by Gary R. Renard. Because I was a student of the Course In Miracles, this book was especially insightful in helping my identify the ego vs. the true Self.

The above 5 helped me in shifting my perspective. Books are like that, appearing when we are ready, just like teachers.

I am just beginning to link out into the world of blogs. I have only been reading a few on a regular basis, and it seems they are in the personal growth arena. Were I to extend an invitation to another blogger to participate in this bibliophile meme, I would ask Bob if he hasn’t played along already… oh, if anyone else finds their way here and would like to consider themselves tagged, that would be great!
